Herniated Discs

Contraindicated Movements

​

â—‹Directly post injury, avoid all exercise until cleared by a doctor/physical therapist

â—‹Avoid spinal flexion (spine rounded), especially with added weight 

â—‹If painful, avoid rotation and lateral flexion (spine bending side to side)

â—‹Do not load the spine with more than the given body weight

Accommodating Movements

​

â—‹Reduce spinal compression

â—‹Stability and balance exercises

â—‹Stabilize spine while moving legs  

â—‹Deep gluteal and hamstring stretches (primarily for lumbar herniations)

â—‹Neutral pelvis

â—‹If not painful, gentle lumbar extensions can often be comfortable
